Zulah Canada: Frequently Asked Questions

About Zulah

What is Zulah?

Zulah (pronounced "Zoo-lah") is a Canadian incense brand based in Markham, Ontario, offering hand-dipped incense sticks made in Sri Lanka. Founded by Indi in 2020, Zulah creates incense for daily rituals such as morning routines, meditation, and evening wind-downs. The name comes from Princess Zulah, a fictional bedtime-story character.

Who makes Zulah incense?

Zulah incense is hand-dipped by artisans in Sri Lanka using traditional, time-tested techniques. Production supports more than 300 small villages, including Gannoruwa (Kandy), Baddegama, Kadawatha, Kiriwaththuduwa, and Panadura.

Ingredients & Safety

What are Zulah incense sticks made of?

Zulah incense sticks are made from joss powder (a natural binder from tree bark that works when mixed with water), wood powder, and a small amount of charcoal that extends the burn to about one hour. The incense sticks are then hand-dipped in fragrance oil compliant with IFRA standards. They contain no animal or petroleum by-products. Each stick is made from bamboo and is 9 inches in length.

Is Zulah incense vegan?

Yes. Zulah incense is vegan, contains no animal by-products, and is cruelty-free with no animal testing.

Is Zulah incense safe to burn?

Zulah incense is made with natural base ingredients and no petroleum by-products, but all incense produces smoke, so use it with care. Burn it in a well-ventilated room, keep it away from children, pets, and flammable items, and never leave it unattended. If you have asthma, allergies, or are pregnant, check with a health professional before burning incense regularly.

Burning & Use

How long does a Zulah incense stick burn?

A standard Zulah luxury incense stick burns for about one hour. Giant luxury sticks burn for up to three hours, which suits longer meditation or ritual sessions.

How do I burn incense sticks?

Place the stick upright in a holder, light the tip, let it flame briefly, then blow it out so it smoulders. Keep the holder on a heat-safe surface away from drafts and flammable items.

Which scent should I choose?

Choose by the mood you want:

  • Sandalwood: earthy and grounding, good for meditation.
  • Lavender: calming, suited to evening or bedtime routines.
  • Protection: for cleansing a space or setting an intention.
  • Brown Suga: a sweeter, cozy blend of cardamom and clove.
  • Giant Frankincense, Cinnamon & Mukul Blend: a long burn for extended rituals.

Not sure? The Sample Pack lets you try several scents.

Can incense hide strong smells, like in a garage or studio?

Yes. Many customers burn incense to freshen garages, creative studios, and other spaces.

How many sticks are in a pack?

Large packs contain 20 sticks, Mini Packs contain 12, and the Sampler Pack contains 5.
